MUSIC
Music from the Movies
Have you ever heard a song and had a movie scene instantly come to mind? A film’s soundtrack is every bit as important as the actors, dialog and special effects. Movies would be nowhere without these incredible songs that give the mood for powerful scenes. From Rock and Pop, to Jazz and Funk, this major has everything a musician could want! Whether you sing, play percussion, guitar or saxophone, you will all collaborate to recreate and perform some of the most memorable tunes in movie history. If you love music and movies, this Major is for you!
DANCE
Movie Musicals: Dance for the Big Screen
Do you dream of being a Broadway sensation and a movie star? You can do both at Horizon Arts Camp! This Arts Major will fuse together jazz and musical theatre dance, work toward understanding each dance styles, and discover one's own creativity while learning some innovative choreography. Proper dance technique will be taught daily to support the challenging dance moves that will culminate in the final performance. Movie musicals from the past (such as Grease, Flashdance and Saturday Night Fever) and the present (such as Chicago, Dream Girls and High School Musical) will inspire our incredible routines that will wow the audience at the Arts Showcase!

Sketch Comedy: SNL Style
Embrace your idiosyncrasies! In this Major you can use your funny quirks to your advantage while you develop comedy sketches from scratch! Using inspiration from shows like Saturday Night Live and The Second City, actors in this Major will not only perform, but they will also get the chance to become writers. Using improvisation as a base, the entire cast will create a series of scenes that will be sure to have the Arts Showcase audience rolling in the aisles with laughter! You will learn how to develop characters, be spontaneous and make bold choices to create compelling comedy scenes.
VISUAL ARTS
Clay Sculpture: Creating in the Third Dimension
Discover clay! A versatile medium with almost limitless possibilities. Learn to mold figures in 3D and build tiles, cups and vases by hand. Use tools and stamps to add interesting textures to your designs. Once your creations are dried and fired, paint with glazes to bring your clay to life! Learn the skills it takes to turn a lump of clay into a beautiful piece of art! Show off your final fired pieces in our Arts Showcase Gallery.
SESSION 2 (July 30 - August 17, 2012)
MUSIC
A Broadway SMASH!
No need for a call-back…you got the part! This Major is perfect for the vocal performer who loves musical theatre. Campers will get a chance to work on several numbers from the golden age of Broadway to contemporary musical theatre! Over the course of the session we will cover vocal technique, vocal performance, song analysis and acting through song. Be the Broadway stars at our end of session Arts Showcase.
Some previous vocal experience/training is required.
DANCE Contemporary Hip Hop Fusion:A Tribute to the Legends
Whether its Etta James or Whitney Houston, dance has always been motivated by great music. This dance major will explore contemporary and hip-hop styles while gaining an appreciation for the artists that inspire us to dance! You will be challenged in both individual and ensemble work with all the technique you need to achieve success for the final performance. The choreography will be completely original and all dancers will have a chance to contribute to the creative process. Come learn to dance, create choreography and perform!

Acting for Film & Television: The Golden Globes
Are you ready for your close-up? Through improv exercises and acting training, you will strength your skills as a performer while bringing memorable characters to life on screen. In this Major, the cast will work on scenes from award-winning TV series and films while developing both individual and ensemble skills. Learn to play to the camera and create characters that deliver true-to-life performances. Experience a professional film atmosphere, use props, memorize lines and learn in-depth film terminology while recreating scenes from genres like drama, comedy and action.
VISUAL ARTS
Illustration, Imagination & Story Creation
Do you like to create characters? Have you ever dreamt of illustrating a book or creating a graphic novel? In this Major, you will use your imagination to create a unique character and develop a story around it. Campers will be challenged to break out of the box and create large expressive poses to tell the character’s story. Learn simple techniques to recreate the human form, and use colours to make that form jump off the page and give it a personality! Each camper will complete a graphic storyboard and design a creative way to present it at our Arts Showcase Gallery.
