Staff FAQ’S
What do I need to know about Horizon Arts Camp?
Horizon Arts Camp is a registered charity operating a summer day camp along with fall and spring programming. Our activities include professional programming in the performing and visual arts with a balance of traditional camp activities and leadership development.
HACs programs are co-ed, serving children and youth from 7-15 years of age. At Horizon Arts Camp, we focus on ensuring that both the arts and camp are accessible by providing a camp fee subsidy program for families of various income levels.
What do I wear everyday?
All staff are required to wear a staff t-shirt (the camp will provide you with two, but additional shirts may purchased), so that you are identifiable to both campers and their parents. Staff are not permitted to alter their camp shirt in anyway. The rest of your attire should be neat and appropriate for camp activities and the weather.
How do you choose staff members?
Camp staff are chosen through an application and interview process. H.A.C. looks for staff who have demonstrated skill in working with children and in the arts. Staff must show enthusiasm for the arts and for working with children along with a strong sense of responsibility. Counsellors must be at least 16 years of age by December 31, 2011. Arts Program Specialists will be finished post-secondary education with considerable work experience behind them. Depending on the position, Head Staff will be finishing or be finished their university/college education. References are checked for all potential staff members and a police reference check is required for all staff who are hired.
Where is the camp?
Horizon Arts Camp run out of Kingsway College School in west end Toronto. The address is 4600 Dundas Street West and the nearest intersection is Royal York Road and Dundas Street West. It is accessible by TTC and has ample parking for those travelling by car.
What are the dates and hours of camp for 2012?
The 2012 dates for staff will be June 25 to August 21, 2012. Work can begin as early as mid-May for some positions. The regular camp day for campers is 8:30am - 4:00pm, Monday to Friday. Counselling staff are required to arrive at camp by 8:00am and are dismissed by 4:30pm. The times will vary for other staff according to positions.
Are there any days where staff are required to stay late?
Yes. Working at a camp is not a typical 9 to 5 job. Things do come up that require extra attention to ensure that camp is successful for our campers. Depending on your position in camp, you may be required to arrive earlier or stay later. All staff attend weekly staff meetings until 6pm and the Visitors' Day Arts Showcase (twice during the summer, July 19 & August 16) until 9:30pm. There may be times when staff need to stay late to prepare an activity, write reports or meet with supervisors. This time is considered to be a part of your regular work day, so no extra compensation will be issued.
What kind of support can I expect to receive as a staff member?
Horizon Arts Camp recognizes how demanding the camp environment can be and every effort will be made to ensure that you are successful in your work at camp. The Directors and other supervisory staff are always available to lend a helping hand whether its tackling a problem or needing an extra player for a game of basketball! Ongoing feedback from staff is valued and helps us to improve the camp and make it an enjoyable place to work. All staff will receive regular feedback from their immediate supervisor both orally and in writing.
What if I have to miss a day of work?
There are only 6 weeks of camp sessions, so your daily attendance is mandatory. Working at Horizon Arts Camp is a committed that requires 100% dedication. The only acceptable excuse for missing a day of work is severe illness. Any other obligations that interfere with your ability to attend camp must be discussed with the Camp Director well in advance.
