MEET OUR DIRECTOR
Lisa Phillips
Lisa with Jean-Marc Genereux, judge for So You Think You Can Dance Canada at The Can-Am Dancesport Latin/Ballroom Competition.
Lisa brings over 25 years of camp experience to Horizon Arts Camp. Prior to becoming the Founder/Director of Horizon Arts Camp, Lisa worked for 5 years at Camp Encore/Coda, a music camp in Maine, U.S.A. and was the Founder and Director of the AFC Arts Adventure Camp (2004-2008).
Lisa holds a degree in Psychology along with post-graduate certificates in Arts Administration and Children's Mental Health.
As an active volunteer with the Ontario Camps Association (OCA), Lisa has served on the Steering Committee for the Annual Directors Conference; designed and facilitated workshops, and had an article published on the Diversity of Camp in the Kids’ Camps publication. In January 2008, Lisa was honoured by the OCA with a Volunteer Recognition Award for her contributions to the association.
In addition to her camp experience, Lisa has worked in both film and television; has taught Musical Theatre to children and youth for 11 years; and has worked for several not-for-profit organizations including Arts for Children of Toronto where she served as the Administrative Director.
Lisa’s passion for camp stemmed from her many years as a camper herself. Her dedication grew as a youth as she became a Counsellor-In-Training (CIT). Her expertise led her to become a Senior Counsellor, CIT Coordinator, the Musical Theatre Program Director, then on to the Section Head, and ultimately the Camp Director.
Most recently, Lisa has rediscovered her love of dance. Lisa proudly showcases her gifts as an example to children who long to pursue their dreams. Her mission is to fuse her appreciation of the arts with her depth and understanding of the camp experience as a tool and a means to belong to a community of like-minded kids. Her talent at weaving belief in oneself, fearlessness, belonging and vision and hope for the future make this camp a one of a kind gem that shines above all others. Lisa’s passion, leadership, unique programming and creative concepts have led Horizon Arts Camp to be widely recognized.
Lisa Phillips is a groundbreaker in the camp industry. Horizon Arts Camp time and time again, has proven to change the lives of kids that would have otherwise been lost and unappreciated into creating the Leaders and the Stars of Tomorrow.
