TOP OF THE BILLBOARD CHARTS (Music)
Instructor: Nicky Phillips

What do The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, and The Black Eyed Peas all have in common? They have all had hits that have topped the Billboard Charts! In this Major, campers will get a chance to play tunes that have topped the Billboard Charts throughout the decades. Campers will learn about rhythm, different musical styles, how to interpret a song, and finally, how transform a song into an electrifying performance. With chart-topping hits as our inspiration, campers will use guitar, piano, percussion, voice and other available instruments to create their own arrangements of these famous songs.

DANCING THROUGH THE DECADES (Dance)
Instructor: Katie Robinson

Think Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgen were the first dynamic duo to hit the big screen? Think again.  From Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, Hollywood stars have been lighting up the screen with their fancy footwork for decades.  In Dancing Through The Decades, campers will have a chance to explore various dance crazes from the 20th and 21st century, as well as the characters who have popularized them.  Drawing moves from such hits as Swing!, Hairspray, and In The Heights, as well as dance inspirations Elvis, Chubby Checker, MC Hammer, and Justin Timberlake, campers will have the opportunity to explore the history of pop culture dance in a modern setting.

A JOURNEY THROUGH MYTH & MASK (Theatre)
Instructor: Claire Wynveen

Theatre was born from myth thousands of years ago, and we still use these ancient stories to make sense of our lives today. In this Major, campers will collectively create their own play from stories and myths that we tell each other around the “campfire”. We will use improv games to re-enact myths from Africa, Ancient Greece, First Nations communities and modern myths from Toronto in 2010. Next, we will develop mythical characters through mask work and physical theatre by using the actor’s primary tool: their body!  Each camper will create their own mask representing their character, and spend lots of time developing how they walk, talk and think. For the end of session Showcase, campers will perform a collective piece highlighting the myths they find most relevant in their lives. If you have an interest in acting and storytelling, this is the Major for you!

CLAYMATION CREATION (Visual Arts)
Instructor: Marina Nicolaou

Campers who choose this major will develop, direct, and sculpt their own clay animation movie. In groups, they will work on a four step process, which includes storyboarding, sculpting, designing backdrops, and filming. Movies will include a minimum of three characters, which will be made entirely out of clay, and brought to life using stop-motion technology. Additional props can also be made out of clay, while backdrops will be created with two-dimensional materials. The completed movies will be screened at the end of session Showcase and burned to DVD as a collection for each camper to take home.

SESSION TWO (August 2-20, 2010)

GLEE CLUB (Music)
Instructor: Nicky Phillips

Do you like to sing? Are you a fan of the popular TV show that has made the word Glee cool again? Join Horizon’s very own Glee Club and learn and perform smash hits accompanied by the H.A.C. House Band. This Major will focus on vocal training and technique, individual and group singing, and how to transform a song into a moving performance that will wow the audience at the end of season Showcase! SHAKESPEARE GOES TO THE MOVIES (Theatre)
Instructor: Claire Wynvee

Have you ever wanted to act on film?  Have you ever wanted the opportunity to perform some of the world’s most famous roles?  In Shakespeare Goes to the Movies campers will explore the world of on-camera acting, and the techniques that have shaped some of the most memorable performances of our time.  Campers will learn some of the basics of film and how to become comfortable acting in front of the camera. Taking inspiration from modern adaptations of Shakespeare’s work such as West Side Story (Romeo and Juliet), She’s The Man (Twelfth Night), and 10 Things I Hate About You (Taming of the Shrew), participants will work with scripts from both the modern and classic texts and weave them into a thrilling performance. If you are curious about film and theatre (and how to bring the two together) this is the Major for you!

HOT OFF THE PRINTMAKING PRESS! (Visual Arts)
Instructor: Marina Nicolaou
In this Major, campers will design and assemble their own handmade art books!  Participants will learn basic printmaking techniques to create original designs.  Working with specialized printmaking materials, campers will have the opportunity to transform foam sheets into magnificent collages.   Once finished, they will roll paint over their collages, press them to their choice of paper, and create an image similar to making a stamp.  In the final week, campers will assemble an individual book made up of their own work as well as prints from their fellow campers. Campers will also design their own book covers, and choose from a variety of binding techniques. Each participant will take home their own book. Using everyone’s designs one final book will be assembled that will remain with Horizon Arts Camp! All books will be displayed at the Visual Arts Exhibit at the end of session Showcase.
