Major Choices For 2009

MUSIC: Studio Jam

Instructor: Nicky Phillips

Do you love music? What if, for three weeks you could not only listen to music, but make it yourself. In Studio Jam, upper campers will develop their skills and enhance their love of music while exploring a variety of genres of music ranging from pop, hip hop, folk, jazz and musical theatre. Using guitar, piano, percussion, voice and other available instruments, we will work on 3-5 songs that will be played, sung and performed by you on Visitor’s Day. Campers will learn about rhythm, musical terminology, analyzing specific styles of music, and how to interpret a song into a moving and exciting performance. Original music composition will also be a part of this major. Get ready to rock in Studio Jam!

DANCE: Urban Dance

Instructor: Nylda "Lady Noyz" Gallardo-Lopez

In this major we will explore the movements and foundational elements of Urban dance as well as stretches and warm-up drills. We will explore basic foundations of various genres of dance including; break dancing, new school Hip-hop, Latin American, Hip-hop fusion, partner dancing, and freestyle (improvisation). This major will give campers a chance to use their own bodies and imaginations as a source for creating characters, places and stories. Participants will engage in activities that encourage growth, self-awareness and self-esteem. Together we will create a 2-3 minute dance piece to be performed on Visitor’s Day. Each day will finish with a Cipher (sharing circle) where the participants get the opportunity to show off what they have learned!

DRAMA: The World is a Stage

Instructor: Misha Shulman

Using techniques that changed the history of theatre, we will collectively create a play over the course of the session. Participants will learn acting exercises of the Living Theatre, where actors such as Al Pacino, James Earl Jones and Martin Sheen began their careers. We will find ways to work the actor’s most basic tool, the human body, into whatever our imaginations can cook up. Participants will learn how some of the rawest, most influential and most fun plays of the twentieth century were created, and then will get a chance to do the same. Drawing from their lives and the life of the city around them, the group will use theatre exercises to develop a story line and staging, and decide together who, how and what our new play will be about. If you like acting, directing, and if you want to work together to rock your world into the best shape it can be, this Major is for you.

VISUAL ARTS: Clay-mation Creation

Instructor: Marina Nicolaou

Campers who choose this major will develop, direct, and sculpt their own clay animation movie. In groups, they will work on a four step process, which includes storyboarding, sculpting, designing backdrops, and filming. Movies will include a minimum of three characters, which will be made entirely out of clay, and brought to life using stop-motion technology. Additional props can also be made out of clay, while backdrops will be created with two-dimensional materials. The completed movies will be burned to DVD as a collection, and distributed to each camper.
